Description

 

In this class, students will conduct advanced readings and decisions around issues in their community and write publishable Op-Eds about topics they care about. Specifically, the class is oriented for students to submit Op-Eds to the New York Times Student Editorial Contest, the premiere student op-ed competition in the United States, where they can earn national recognition. Each class will include mini-lessons on content, readings, group analysis/debate/discussion, and writing activities. In order to build holistic and higher-order thinking reading and analysis skills, each class will feature a reading and discussion on a topic that can inform their Op-Ed.

 

Overall Objectives

 

  • Students will increase their reading and writing proficiency levels in non-fiction Standardized English.
  • Students will learn advanced research techniques for both secondary and the primary techniques of observations, survey, interviews.
  • Students will produce their own Op-Eds to submit to the NYTimes Student Editorial Contest.
  • Students will improve understanding of key issues and topics to prepare them for college applications.
